Discipleship
A disciple (from the Latin discipulus meaning 'pupil' or 'learner') is a follower; someone who takes another person as a teacher and model. As Christians, Jesus is our teacher, role model and friend.
In John 15:15 Jesus says, ‘“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you”’.
And in John 8:31-32 he says, '"If you continue in my Word then you are my disciples indeed. And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free"'.
Jesus calls us into an on-going personal relationship – being in His presence and getting to know Him personally prepares us for everything that He calls us to do as His disciples.
In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus says, '"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'" And in John 13:34-35 he says, ‘“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples”’.
As Christians, Jesus has called us to love God and love one another. Discipleship should be characterised by love.
