Children should be part of the church – Tues 10 July
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” This verse is brilliant to get boring old Anglican churches to have a Sunday school so only the adults are bored to death in the services while the children colour in pictures of Noah’s big boat. But there must be so much more. Our society is in such a mess, so many teenagers are ruining there own lives and everyone around them is being dragged down.
The government doesn't know what to do anymore – they can’t control them. Standard discipline doesn't work because the kids just don’t care! What can be done, who can help – Jesus – and he asked us in Matthew 19:14 to give little children (and teenagers – everyone) to his care and protection. So why don’t we do it?
We can start from a young age – not just teaching children bible stories but training them as disciples of Jesus.
I am well aware of the fact that this seems simple, and that probably no one reading this is actually a child – but it is still important to you ‘old’ people!
How many problems are there in the church…how many of them could be solved with hindsight? Probably most of them; so don’t let the problem we have with young people and children be one of them – do something about it.
From a heavenly perspective, don’t you think it is a good idea to get plus points with Jesus (although I know that may not be theological, but you have to give me poetic licence – I am only young myself!!) Of course we want to do what Jesus says, so when we get to heaven we can be happy that we helped him.
A way to live this out, get involved, maybe at church – but I am not trying to pressure people into joining the children’s leadership team – although you are always very appreciated. I am talking about in your community, talk to the kids on the street, get involved in action projects, do big things to help save their souls!
The one thing I struggle with when it comes to this is trusting I will be safe, and although I am big, there is no way I would hold up well in a fight – but Jesus will – and to be totally blunt and serious we all know that if we go in faith to help the kingdom and it gets hard we will be protected – God promises angels – and they will come! |

They are a captive audience now but if we mess it up it will be down to another church to attract them with an outreach programme as adults. Any salesman will confirm that it is easier to keep a customer than to find a new one. Those not directly involved with children can still be praying for them. Pray for children of christian families but, above all, for those who do not even get to church or have anyone else to pray for them.

I also think that we cant mess it up - we shouldn't worry about that so much - if we step out in faith even if we go wrong or is doesnt happen the way we want God can make it good!

I see this as being part of the overall problem. Martin Smith of the christian band Delirious? recently came out with some very wise words - "Youth are not a separate part of the church - they are the church!" I do not see ageism in the Word anywhere. Father God anointed King David as a child shepherd. Jesus Himself was teaching in the temple at the age of 13 - remember that day when his mum could not find him! I think the key to a successful approach to children and youth is not to treat them as separate and to be tolerated but as a living and active part of the bride of Christ. We need to embrace all ages in the church and value their input and service to God's people and allow for mistakes and love each other through it all. I feel we need to show children and youth how treasured they are by Jesus and do as Jesus would do - serve them and love them and they in turn will do the same - all under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. Thank You Jesus for Your beautiful bride! Have a good day James! Liz
