Reality TV!! - 25th June 2007
I’ll make an apology at the start of this week’s devotionals, I have to confess, I missed the deadline for submitting them. I knew well in advance that I was writing them sometime towards the end of June/early July but hadn’t quite marked the date and worked back to when I needed to start thinking about them.
The reality is, I messed up. However, I have confessed to those that need confessing to and sought forgiveness, and on the basis that you are reading this, I am assuming that my honesty in admitting I messed up has won their approval to continue. Have I succeeded in winning by admitting my shortcomings and gaining redemption that actually puts me in a better position through doing so – have I won some votes to improve my rating through being honest? All this may sound a little familiar in the context of this week’s subject – reality TV. This is what contestants sometimes do to increase their popularity/win approval and avoid being voted out rather than not admitting their errors and being sent on their way, because inevitably, the all seeing cameras reveal the truth!!
Reality TV has been with us for some time now, and many will remember the first Big Brother when 10 reasonably normal people were locked in a house for a couple of months to see how they functioned, whilst undertaking challenges but also having to undertake nominations based on people’s behaviours. For those who have read George Orwell’s 1984, some of his observations about the ‘progress’ of the human race are surprisingly accurate, and in many respects the 23 years that have elapsed sine then with the advent of the digital age has only served to increase the validity of his thoughts.
Where’s the spiritual bit I hear you ask – it is here. God’s view of the world is like watching reality TV 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He is the all Seeing Eye, He knows what happens in every part of our life, there is no veneer or spin that we can put on things to convince Him otherwise. In giving our lives to Him, opening ourselves up and being completely honest, that makes certain we aren’t going to be evicted, voted out or have to have a sing off! That’s the thought I would like to leave you with today, are you being honest with God, because he knows what we are doing anyway?
Have a good Monday |

| Wed 27th June 2007 - Big Brother | | I make no apology for going back to this one, because this is the benchmark of reality TV. Providing you don’t take it too seriously, this is an interesting snapshot of human nature and interaction and how it works.
