The New Covenant 5 April 2007
“When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” Luke 22:14-20
Jesus, in his mission on earth, was the fulfilment of the Old Testament covenants and of the Law. Jesus brought a new way.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35
Jesus provides for us, nourishes us and sustains us, both physically and spiritually. Christians throughout the world meet in His name and share bread and wine; as an act of worship; to receive spiritual sustenance; as an act of remembrance and in thanksgiving.
Take time today to reflect on the body of Jesus, broken for each of us on the cross. Take time to reflect on the blood of Jesus, shed for each of us on the cross.
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
Thank you Jesus.
Amen |
