Here’s looking at you, kid - Thurs 15th March 2007
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic primary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun had written a note, and posted it on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."
We’ve been thinking about our eyes but what about God’s eyes? What is God looking at? There’s a line from a hymn that says ‘his eye is on the sparrow’ which, like the joke above, always tempts me to think ‘well, he’s not looking at me then, is he?’ which wasn’t at all what the hymn writer intended.
The Bible tells us that ‘the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are committed to him’. 2 Chronicles 16:9
Interesting isn’t it that most people find the idea of God watching them somewhat sinister but God’s purpose is to seek out those who hearts are committed to him and to strengthen them. The first verses of Psalm 139 confirm God’s complete knowledge of our comings and goings. You know when I leave and when I get back, I am never out of your sight’ (from The Message).
So he’s looking at you kid… and, don’t worry, he loves you. |
