“I don’t know who or what God is exactly. All I know is he’s more powerful than mum and dad put together.”

Lisa Simpson, overheard her brother’s prayer and bargain with God. The following morning she is horrified when she realises that he’s not going to keep his side of the deal. She doesn’t have a deeply considered theology on it, but she knows God is not to be trifled with. Lisa may have only compared God to her parents, but in her eight-year old mind God was more powerful than the most powerful thing she could relate to.

Do we ever have a too small view of God? Do we ever trifle with him, relying on his grace and forgiveness before the event? When we praise God for greatness and sing songs of a great big God, do we think of his power in history or the other side or the world?

Do you ever stop and realise that the power that raised Lazarus from the dead, or calmed storms, or that won impossible battles is within you. As you read this, open the post, make the tea, the power of almighty God is in you through the Holy Spirit. Right now, if God wanted you to declare a famine in this land, you would have the power and authority for it to happen.

I don’t know about you but that’s too much for me. For Lisa, in the quote above, God was simply more powerful than the most powerful thing she could relate to. What is the most powerful thing that you can relate to? Money? Political influence? Maybe a bulldozer? Maybe a vicious animal? Whatever it is, realise that God is more powerful than any of those things.

Today, whenever you see something or someone of power, just remind yourself that God is greater.

I love these Simpsons references! Really helps drive the point home.
Thanks for (as always) a helpful series of devotions to read during my working day.

PS: Maybe you should do a "Gospel according to Bart" - like they did with Peanuts 30+ years ago
