We have come to worship him 20 December 2006
How much do we put ourselves out to worship the Lord our God?
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.” Matthew 2:1-6
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, as predicted by the prophet, “for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people.” Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11 Jesus went on to do just that, he laid down his life for each of us. At Christmas, we celebrate Jesus entering the world to start out on the path that he would follow to the cross, for us.
Our response is to worship him, with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. The Magi from the east were not Jews yet they saw the signs and travelled on a long journey so that they could worship Jesus. They put themselves out to quite an extent, so that they could worship our Lord. Can we learn something from them?
How much do we put ourselves out to worship the Lord our God? Do we worship Jesus, our Saviour, as the first thing that we do, or just when there isn’t something more “important” or “interesting” to do?
Something to think on today during our ever more frantic preparations; only five days to go. |
