Which God do you call upon? - 11th December 2006

Jabez cried to the God of Israel, saying ……I Chronicles 4 – 10 Amplified

It is written that Jabez cried to the God of Israel about his problem – he wanted his territory extended, God’s favour, to be kept away from evil and to be blessed indeed. Amazingly this apparently very simple prayer was answered by God instantly.

A man of God recently explained to me that part of this answered prayer was in the name of the God Jabez chose to pray to. Jabez didn’t pray to the God of Abraham or Isaac. He didn’t pray to Jehovah Jireh nor to Jehovah Elshadi.

Jabez knew his problem very well and searched the scripture day and night until he found a man whom he could identify with in the bible. He found Israel who like himself had a not so rosy background and yet God blessed him. We know that Israel (Jacob which means supplanter) struggled with God the whole night and prevailed. His relationship with others especially his brother Esau was far from perfect. So this tells your background doesn’t matter or whether you have caused pain to others or not, God is no respecter of persons, he will hear you if you repent of your sins and call upon his name in truth and hope of his unfailing love.

Here is my suggestion which I believe is from the Holy Spirit:

Why don’t you look through the scripture and find a place that identifies with your problem and then call upon the God that responds to your situation:

  • the God of Hannah if you need a child

  • the God of Daniel if you are in the fire

  • the God of Naaman if you need your health to be renewed like that of a youth

  • the God of Abraham if you need provision

I am sure you got the idea. As for Jabez he called upon the God of Israel, saying Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! …”

By the time he finished his prayer, God had already granted his request according to the word - before you CALL UPON MY NAME I already answer you
