If you were to take an average person, put them through a blender and then sort out all the different parts, you would have the following:
Enough FAT to make 7 bars of soap
Enough IRON to make 1 nail
7 teaspoons of SUGAR
Enough PHOSPHORUS for 2000 matches
Enough LIME to whitewash a shed
Enough MAGNESIUM, POTASSIUM & SULPHUR to make 3 fireworks
Enough Carbon for 900 pencil leads
8 gallons of WATER
The value of these chemicals and products is about £20. I guess we have all met someone who values themselves that lowly. I also guess that many of us have gone through stages in our lives where we value ourselves very lowly. Perhaps there is someone right now who figures that they’re not worth a penny. God sees things differently.
On holiday, last year, my daughter took her favourite cuddly toy with her. It’s a scruffy looking cat, called Cherry, which originally cost us a few pounds and has been through it all: dirt, grime, washing cycles, totally excessive cuddling, puddles, etc.
Now the inevitable happened and one evening Vicki lost her beloved cat. Lindsey and I searched everywhere, and in the end made posters offering a reward far in excess of the monetary value of that cat. Why? Because its value was not based on it’s cost, contents or even how much it would cost to replace. Its value was based on how much it was loved.
The same is true of us. The world may have all sorts of wrong value measures, but we are beyond value, we are priceless because we are loved by God. We don’t deserve that love and we can’t earn it. God loves us because of who he is, and that makes us so precious. |
