‘Rich beyond your wildest dreams!’ - 5th October 2006
Tic, toc. Tic toc. Tic toc. I have a weakness for clocks, there are 8 in our kitchen and I’m not letting on how many round the rest of the house. Let’s just say it’s a major chore every time the hour changes.
Clocks, however, are not the treasure that makes you ‘Rich beyond your wildest dreams’. The real treasure is time. You might think you never have enough but in fact you have just the same amount as everyone else, we all get 7 days in week, 365 days in a year and 24 hours in a day. Okay, I’ll accept that some people have more to cram in to that time than others but that’s a choice we make. The writer of Proverbs said ‘Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom’ (Proverbs 1:7). Given that wisdom was yesterday’s treasure this sounds like a good prayer to me.
If you live the biblical average life span of 70 years, how many days do you think that will be? Want some time to work it out? Tough, the answer is 25,550 days. Does that sound a lot to you? It doesn’t sound a lot to me. Numbering my days in this way makes me realise I need to savour them, not wish them away because I’m waiting for some future event, I can’t afford to fritter them away either. I need to make everyone count.
We each have the gift of ‘today’ – let’s ask ourselves, ‘how am I going to make this one count?’ Who will I love? Who can I encourage? What can I do that will change the world just a little bit.
‘This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it’.
