‘Rich beyond your wildest dreams!’ - 4th October 2006
If you were invited on to Mastermind, what would be your specialist subject? Okay, you might not feel you are up to Mastermind standard but I bet there is something you know a lot a about that I don’t know anything about. And maybe I know a lot of stuff you don’t know, who knows?
The third way in which we are each ‘Rich, beyond our wildest dreams’ is that we have knowledge. There is a bunch of information that resides between our ears and we often take this for granted. Whether we liked school or not, we all gained something from it. You wouldn’t be reading this devotional unless someone had taught you how to read. Being able to read puts you in the top 30% of the world’s population, the remaining 70% are illiterate and are often excluded and impoverished as a result.
You don’t just know how to read, maybe you can add up too. You can understand complex ideas, you can speak other languages, do algebra, make bread, grow things, fix things and explain things.
The Bible personifies wisdom as a female figure and tells us ‘Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her’. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are fiches and honour.’ (Proverbs 3: 13-16)
So today, give thanks for all the stuff you know and those who taught it to you. Start up a conversation with a colleague or friend about what they think is their most valuable possession and remember that ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’ |
