‘Rich beyond your wildest dreams!’ - 3rd October 2006
There is a t-shirt I am very tempted to buy my brother (shh! Don’t tell him). It says in large letters ‘I have the body of a God’ and then underneath in small letters it adds: ‘Buddha’! Actually, regardless of his size, he has an amazing body and so do you and so do I. In our image obsessed culture we have become overly self conscious about our body, fearing it doesn’t match up to some over hyped standard and forgetting just how amazing it is.
Did you know the blood in your body is on a journey 60,000 miles long! When you touch something a message goes to your brain at 124 mph. Your heart beats 100,000 times each day. Your liver has over 500 functions and you don’t have to remind it to do any of them. Your body is truly amazing. It is true that when one bit of our body hurts it’s hard to appreciate the rest, so whenever you are tempted to list your aches and pains, try instead to list all the bits that work at least reasonably well.
The psalmist said we are ‘Fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14) and he didn’t know the half of what was going on inside. So today, give thanks for your amazing body and for your practical activity today you have a choice. Either go out and do some exercise or, if the thought of that makes you feel like lying down, please think about sponsoring one of the St Matthew’s team who over the two weekends will be putting their bodies to work running half marathons for Casa Re’om.
