Yesterday, we compared the places in a football ground with aspects of the Christain life. The pitch itself related to those living actively for Jesus. If you consider yourself ‘on the pitch’ then what exactly is your role. Every player has been told by his manager what position he’s playing, where on the pitch he should be at certain times and what’s expected of him. If one player decides he wants to play somewhere else then the whole team will suffer. For example, it is often the strikers who score the goals and get the glory. If a defender decides that that’s what he wants to do then the team are likely to concede goals and lose because the defence is weak. A great team is not made up of great individuals; it’s made by great teamwork.
Paul made a similar observation, in 1 Corinthians 12, using the body as an example.
It’s important not to compare ourselves with what others are doing. Footballers may be given a monetary value, Christians are not. We are God’s children, each one of us is precious and invaluable to him. He has given us a role that is just as important as anyone else’s. We may not see the reason why but God does.
Paul goes on to say in 1 Corinthians 12:24-25:
God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honour to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. |
