Dependence - 7th June 2006
As we were told the boys stories, we heard several times that so and so was very ill so they prayed for him and now he’s fine. Occasionally one of them would not have enough money for food and her daughter’s medicine so she trusted God to provide for her.
Our brothers and sisters in Mozambique have so little and yet they have learnt to depend on God and seem to see more answers to prayer and miracles than we do. When there are no doctors or money for doctors there is only one person who can help, so you pray and God is faithful.
In our affluence it is so easy to become independent. We forget to ask God, maybe we ask for guidance but for things we need? Do we find reaching for our credit card or arranging an overdraft easier than trusting God to provide? Do we find going to the doctor easier than asking God to heal us? (Again, I know that God often uses doctors, but when we see the doctor let’s seek God’s help too).
If we were to lose our jobs or our good health tomorrow how practiced would we be in relying on God. We are dependant on him, you know, even though we are capable of so much. He could take it all away in a moment but graciously he doesn’t.
How can we learn to depend on the Lord?
“Without me you can do nothing” John15:5
“So do not worry saying, “What shall we eat?” or “what shall we drink” or “what shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things and your heavenly father knows that you need them but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matt 6:31-33
Perhaps as we learn to seek first his kingdom we will stop feeling the need to arrange all these other things as well. |
