Totally irresponsible! – Monday 22 May 2006
I’ve just been watching Top Gear. Crazy! Perhaps a man’s ideal job, driving fast cars, visiting exotic places. This episode included cutting the top of a Renault Espace with a grinding disc to make a convertible, and ended by testing it at 100 miles per hour, and taking it through a car wash. Totally irresponsible! Totally ‘blokey’. And totally fun.
“There was also Benaiah sonn of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two of Moab’s mightiest warriors. Another time he chases a lion down into a pit. Then despite the show and slippery ground he caught the lion and killed it.” 2 Samuel 23: 20-21
Wrestling lions in a snowy pit? Totally irresponsible!
It’s biblical to be a bit irresponsible, for guys to enjoy their masculinity, for us all to enjoy a challenge, to take a few risks.
It’s against the flow of society today where risk assessments, safety notices, rules and regulations take the joy out of life – no wonder teenage boys get bored and end up vandalising building sites – but isn’t God just a bit wild? Didn’t he make us in his image? Shouldn’t we be taking the lead in living life with a bit of risk in it? Let’s turn round the image of Christians from being dull and boring; let’s be just a bit dangerous! Life to the full.
