I have always liked my bed; ever since I can remember really. When I was a child, the decision to go to bed was one that demanded a bit of perseverance, particularly in winter, as we had no central heating. I used to jump in and brace myself for the onslaught of the cold cotton sheets. After a few minutes, I was able to move around in comfort as the bed warmed up. It didn’t matter though. My parents were downstairs. The hot water bottle was at my feet, and my teddy bear was next to me. Bed was safety.
Life is a bit different now. I have central heating, but at times I would happily swap my buzzing late night mind for a colder bedroom. But, just as in the morning, God is faithful. He doesn’t get tired or rest (Psalm 121). He is awake while I rest. I can still sleep in safety.
God is faithful and we can sleep in safety. But I have known Christians who have walked much closer to the Lord than me who have had insomnia brought on by worry. We may know the truth of God’s faithfulness and provision, but still find it hard to let go and sleep at night. Well, there can be all sorts of reasons for insomnia and many things we can do to combat it, but if you are just finding it hard to let go and trust God don’t worry. Look at the prayer below, it is from a Church of England order for ‘Night Prayer’.
Be with us, merciful God,
and protect us through the silent hours of this night,
so that we who are wearied
by the changes and chances of this fleeting world,
may rest upon your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Night Prayer, Church of England 1984
Isn’t it encouraging that so many Christians have had trouble resting that we have got our own prayer! So if you can’t sleep tonight, say this prayer and picture yourself resting in God’s changeless arms. Just relax. God is faithful. If you still can’t sleep, don’t worry; God is there. You can sleep in safety.
