Set Free – 21 May 2010
One of my favourite passages from the bible comes from Paul’s letter to the Romans:
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 [NIV]
Do you feel overwhelmed with freedom today? Sometimes it takes a long time for a captive who has been released to feel fully free. We have no chains, no shackles – we are free indeed. That is our identity – no more in slavery, we are in freedom! I look around and I don’t see a people with the gratitude and joy that freedom brings shining on their faces. If I’m honest, I don’t feel that freedom every day myself, either.
Now we have a new master, we are no longer under the authority of the old master. But our old master would like us to think that our bonds have not been broken. If you think like a slave and act like a slave then your freedom is theoretical not practical. Freedom is what we are meant to experience:
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 [NIV]
If your freedom is real, try to make it practical not just theoretical – it is time we started to ignore the commands of our old master. Your true identity is a free soul…
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 [NIV]
