Carry On Regardless – Because Jesus Did - 13 May 2010
I am constantly amazed by the life Jesus led. The bit that gets me most is when he knew his destiny was the cross, and all that the journey there entailed, he was tempted by the devil and he could have walked away. That his disciples disowned him and gave him no support made it even more difficult. I would be unhappy if my friends disowned me in such a way (that isn’t a cue to do so!)
Yet Jesus carried on, knowing what was in store for him, understanding the bigger picture and the greater good that would come out of this.
If we were asked to take the journey that Jesus took, many of us would shy away and find a reason not to go through with it. Many of you will recall the Tiananmen Square events in 1989. My lasting memory is of ‘Tank Man’, an unknown student who stood in front of 5 Red Army tanks holding a plastic shopping bag, symbolically challenging the might of the State against the freedom of the masses – no one knows who he was or what came of him but it was a very symbolic gesture. I suspect he was arrested, taken away and not heard of again as is often the case, but putting others before himself and fighting for a cause he believed in was the purpose of his mission.
Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice, He died for our sins. He carried on regardless of the cost, knowing that even today what he did sets us free.
I think that is an awesome gesture and one that we cannot forget.
Have a good day.
