Subtle idolatry – 26 February 2010
The problem is our pursuit of wealth.
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24 [NIV]
John D Rockefeller was asked once how much money it would take to be really satisfied. He answered, “Just a little bit more!”
Now consider this:
Much of our pain, sorrow and wastefulness are the bitter consequences of our selfishness. The contemporary agonies of wars, poverty, social injustices, inflation, and environmental pollution are caused by greed… Our love of possessions and the pursuit of financial security thwart our spiritual development. We slip into a subtle form of idolatry that robs us of fully becoming what we are created to be… (David Stanfield 1962)
Take time to consider these questions prayerfully:-
Do I prayerfully discern how to use my financial resources for the common good?
Do I look at my investments, clothing, furniture and other possessions to see if they sow the seeds of war and oppression?
