Offering what you have – 24 February 2010

Have you ever felt discouraged because you can’t afford to give as much as others, or you have less spectacular talents to offer?  Read Jesus’ thoughts on the widow who gave two pennies Luke 21:1-4 (NIV)

There are many ways of helping, not just giving money.  In his book, “Faith Works”, Jim Wallis gives this illustration to encourage us to be creative in what we offer:

“ My doctor moved to a poor area of Washington DC to set up a medical ministry focused on the poor and underserved people… A fundraiser was concerned about poverty in Central America, he decided to do what he does best – raising money.  At the last count he’d put 150 children through school… A middle aged woman stood up at a public meeting and said, ’I’m not a pastor…or a CEO…, but I’ve got something to offer too - I work at McDonald’s and get morning and afternoon breaks, lots of you kids said you’ve no one to talk to, well you know where to find me.’”

The widow gave what she had out of her poverty.  Offering what you have and who you are is enough.  Don’t worry that you’re not a doctor, or that you don’t have a lot of money.  Be creative!

Dear Lord I offer you all that I am, including my lack of confidence, my fears and my inexperience.  Show me how I can make a difference.  Amen
