A sure and certain hope – 8 February 2010
The racing car spun around… again. It seemed that it couldn’t go around any corner without swapping ends. Slowly, the driver headed back to the pits. Later, he gave his thoughts in an interview. “The reality of motor racing,” he said in his familiar Brummy monotone “is that cars break, and today it happened to mine”.
Reality? Never seems to be a good thing does it? When I describe myself, I talk about my brown hair and then, each time I go for a hair cut, I realise that the silver stuff all over the black cover is mine. After Christmas, reality kicks in for a lot of people when they get their credit card bills. Reality never seems to be a good thing does it? Some people do their best to escape reality of course, drink, drugs even bidding on ebay. All these things can give us a fix that will take our minds off reality; for a while anyway.
Of course, as Christians we don’t need to be scared of reality. In fact, it is only in reality that we can be with Jesus. The reality of the situation is that Jesus Christ died for us, and forever bridges the gap between man and God. The reality of the situation is that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God. The reality of the situation is that Jesus is alive and we will live in reality with him forever.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest for ever, in the order of Melchizedek.
