Choices - 29 October 2009
‘As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me, “ Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.” Mark 1:16 -18
Our life is full of choices, or is it?
Our upbringing, our culture, our family, our beliefs, will influence the choices we make.
Is there sometimes only one choice to make? Is there only one path to follow? We have the free will to choose, don’t we?
Simon and Andrew heard Jesus speaking. They were excited by his words, they felt good in his presence and he said to them ‘Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men’.
What a choice.
Continuing with what had always been their way of life, their family and friends.
It is easy to choose between two ways when one is good and the other wrong. It is not easy when both alternatives are clearly in themselves good.
What were Andrew and Simon to do when called by Jesus?
They left their nets.
What would our choice be, what do we cling to? What are the things we would find hard to leave behind? Home and family, children, possessions, job?
O Lord, guide us in the choices we will make today, guide us in the consequences of those choices and help us to make the right choice. |
