Many roads…same destination? – 14 October 2009
Like it or not is a multi-cultural society. Speaking for myself, I love the diversity that so many nationalities bring….not least in culinary matters! Isn’t this such a great time to preach the gospel in the ; after all the world is on our doorstep. Increasingly, though, we live in a society which is increasingly regulated, where political correctness is pervasive and where the thought police are just round the corner, ready to pounce. Maybe I’m just paranoid!!
An unfortunate implication of multi-culturalism is the belief that all roads lead to God. Follow the Buddha or Mohammed or Jesus or Shiva, the choice is yours, they all point to the same God. Or pick and mix, that’s just fine, shows great tolerance and generosity of spirit. How naïve! When you go to an airport do you catch any old flight and expect to reach your chosen destination?
This lie is not new. The devil has been belittling Jesus since the dawn of time.
Peter fell foul of this thinking when Moses and Elijah – huge Old testament prophets - appeared on the mountain to commune with Jesus. See Matthew 17 and 2 Peter 1:16-18. Peter’s suggestion that shelters be built for each of them underlay his belief and misconception that they were somehow equal.
God the Father’s response was dramatic – He spoke from heaven:
“This is my Son whom I love; with Him I am well pleased; listen to Him”
God the Father gave His Son this ringing endorsement which echoes down the centuries.
Dear Father, help me to see Jesus in His glory and proclaim Him as the Supreme Son of God.
