Winning and losing -25 September 2009

I often struggle with the fact that some days I seem to start with a list of jobs, achieve none of them, gain a load more and get lost in the process.  Does this sound familiar?  Gaining the motivation to carry on with the increased burden can be quite difficult sometimes.

Over the years, I have enjoyed reading the biographies of successful people and what has made them successful. Let me give you some facts: -

·         Richard Branson has more business failures than successes; it’s just that he has made big news of the successes.

·         James Dyson was down to his last £100 and had over 1,000 attempts at creating the Dyson vacuum cleaner, he still can’t fully explain how he did it but it works and he is now a multi millionaire.

·         Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, had over 3,000 attempts to make it work before achieving it.

·         Michael Jordan, the world’s greatest basketball player won 6 NBA world titles and was most valuable player countless times. Yet he missed more than 9,000 shots, has lost almost 300 games and has missed the game winning shot 26 times.

All the above are successful, because they kept coming back and trying again, they accepted failure and used it to move on.

So where is the God point?  It is this.  Christ died for us, every single one of us and accepted our multiple failures as part of the process. fill of the failures of the human race, and that’s it, no more.  It is a blank cheque, every time we sin, He forgives us.  When I compare my resilience (very limited) to that, I suspect I would have lasted nanoseconds.

Remember this – God didn’t tell us that the Christian life would succeed easily and avoid suffering, he just said he would be there with us – forever. Earlier in the week I confessed to knowing very few bible verses, but this particular verse was given to me as a teenager and is one of the few I often recall.

called me heavenward in Christ Jesus’. Philippians 3:14

In this verse, Paul is encouraging the Philippians to keep going towards the big prize in a time where circumstances were difficult, can I encourage you to do the same if that is a place that you find yourself in.

Have a great weekend.
