We are all individuals, God made us all different and let’s face it, if we were all the same, the world would be a boring place. That said, many take the view that within the grander scheme of things, individually we are a very small part in a very big world, and so does it matter about what we do as individuals?
I would like to argue the case that it does – for the following reasons.
1. We are children of the living God, every action we take echoes through eternity. But if we live like our choices don’t matter, then we devalue the worth and significance God has placed on us. There is an enemy who wants us to shrink from our significance and wants us to believe that even if we do the right thing, no one else will.
2. We are called to right living by doing the things that work and avoiding those that don’t. Right living may not bring the right result, but can still be right. By being right, however futile we think the impact is, we can still make a difference. Our culture is obsessed with lone heroes because that’s what the media cultivates. Usually behind every lone hero is a group of people who go largely unrecognised but contribute just as much. Take Mother Teresa for example – without the support of hundreds like her, she would not have achieved what she did.
3. We can also make a difference to individuals. Switching to fairly-traded chocolate probably won’t end world poverty but it may be enough to lift one family out of poverty. Sharing the gospel might not change an entire town, but it may bring someone into a meaningful relationship with God.
My point here is that we are not insignificant. We are made in the image of the Almighty God and equipped by His Spirit. If we can live like every single thing we do changes the world in one way or another, it probably will! Like asking a friend or neighbour to church for example. This coming Sunday is Back to Church Sunday, and it may be that doing one right thing may have life changing consequences.
Have a great day.
