“This will happen just as I have described it,
for God has shown you what he is about to do.” Genesis 41:28 [NIV]
Most of us probably check the weather report before we go on a day out or on holiday. In they have a National Weather Service that keeps a careful watch, particularly during the Hurricane season, for potential severe storms that could cause flooding or other natural disasters. In the past some people have disregarded these reports and paid for their folly. Now most people take serious note of them. Forewarned is forearmed, but the forearming is not automatic. Responsible action is required.
Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams points out this truth very clearly. He also told him what needed to be done and how it would avoid disaster. But would Pharaoh forearm himself? The Bible shows that he did and appointed Joseph to be the one to organise the necessary plan to cope with the forthcoming problem.
One of the great mysteries of the relationship between God and humans is the matter of divine sovereignty and human responsibility. Scripture is full of references to God’s ruling supremacy in the affairs of man, yet he also tells us how to respond.
How often do we say “I knew that was going to happen”, and do we know how to respond to it? We seldom get dreams like the ones Pharaoh had, but if we speak with God regularly he somehow lets us know what is going to happen and if we are listening he usually shows us how to respond.
In these times of financial difficulties across the world I wonder how many of us knew it was coming and are we responding to it how God would want us to. Let us each listen to what God is saying and respond how he decrees. I know it can be difficult but our belief and faith in God will enable us to see it through.
