God speaks – you don’t have to make it up! – 3 April 2009
The other night I was at a midweek group with my church. It happens during Lent (proper Anglican style!). There were some people I had not met before from other groups, and a couple from other churches. We were talking about hearing God – which is a good topic.
I hear God quite a lot, not in a big vision, or a loud voice – but a feeling in my gut. I think it is amazing.
Part of the session, this one evening, was for people to share what God has been saying to them recently. These kinds of things excite me, because I get to hear amazing stories of God meeting with people and changing them.
My expectations were not quite met though. Well, some people had amazing stories, and that’s brilliant. But some had rather less amazing ones – of how God had done something amazing in a conversation or something. This is an OK concept on its own, but not the way they said it.
It was as if they were searching for something so hard that what they came up with was not really God, it was just a ‘nice’ conversation.
They seemed happy with this!
1 Corinthians 13:2 says that we may “fathom all mysteries and all knowledge.”
Why then would we settle for so little? Have bigger expectations – he can meet them. Your father in heaven can and will speak to you, loud and clear – just ask and give him some space to do it!
Don’t take this as me thinking I am better than you – I am not doing this! Take it as inspiration - that wherever you are, you can be closer to God. Don’t just be happy to stay in the same place, challenge God and yourself to grow closer to him. |
