Challenge: the Bible as proof? – 1 April 2009

Today is going to be a bit more of a challenge, and maybe a bit more controversial than normal.  Don’t just take what I say - don’t ever do that!  Think about it and see if you agree.

The Bible.

It tells the story of the resurrection of Jesus; which is the best message the world could hear.

I was talking to someone the other day, who assumed that I would believe in the resurrection even if it was proved false* – I thought this idea was crazy.  Is it what Christians are meant to think?

The Bible is not the proof for the resurrection.  If it did not happen then the Bible is wrong.  The proof works the other way round - we believe the Bible because the resurrection did happen, and the spirit of God leads us to the pages of that book.

I think, as a last note, this verse is useful:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16 [NIV]

The Greek word used here “ophelimos” means ‘useful’.

The Bible is not the proof of the truth – it is just useful when we already know the truth.

*this is not a plausible thing to ever happen – it was just an example.
