Scotland, lochs, fun & Jesus – 31 March 2009
A few weeks ago I spent the weekend in . is a good place! I just wanted to get that out there, it has nothing to do with today’s devotional but it is true.
We spent Saturday canoeing and kayaking on a couple of lochs* (which incidentally, for my first trip to , was a good sample).
Everyone we hung out with at the weekend was a Christian – my girlfriend’s brother and sister-in-law, the couple we went canoeing with and the couple that came for dinner on Sunday. But at no point did we talk about church (apart from when we were going there on Sunday morning).
I found this strange, and it took a long conversation on the way back (which is a long way) to come to a reason. They are all amazing Christians, they love Jesus and their lives are about him – but they are also great mates.
Sometimes in church we can get distracted – life becomes about someone’s new car, a falling out of some members of the congregation, or the latest rebellion of a teenager. These things can take over – spoiling our enjoyment of life. I had a brilliant weekend, and felt closer to God on the way back. I was just enjoying life.
Enjoying life – isn’t that a lot of what Jesus had in mind?
I am sure you are familiar with this passage from John’s gospel:
A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest. John 10:10 [CEV]
Do fun stuff, enjoy yourself – just do it with Jesus; don’t make him into a political thing!
