Listen to Him - 2 March 2009
Jesus, through his death and resurrection, has allowed each of us to have a personal relationship with God. Relationships thrive on conversation; 2 way conversation. We can be keen to talk to God, are we always as keen to hear God talking to us? This week we will reflect a little on some instances recorded in scripture where God has spoken to his people.
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Matthew 17:5
Peter, James and John, three disciples, went with Jesus up a high mountain where Jesus was transfigured; his true glory revealed, and where they heard the voice of the Lord speaking to them. “This is my Son; listen to him!” Those same words are of course just as applicable to the followers of Jesus today; you and me.
Jesus communicates in many ways with us, through prayer, scripture, words of others, worship services, music, creation, and more besides. But how much do we listen? How much do we take notice? How often do we almost open a ‘box’ listen to God, think ‘that’s interesting’, then close the ‘box’ and carry on as if nothing has happened; our lives remaining untouched by God’s communication with us.
It is up to us to try and tune in to God, to take our spiritual ear muffs off. When we hear God speaking to us then we need to take the time to listen. The more we heed God speaking to us, the stronger our relationship with him will be.
Take time today to reflect on how good you are at listening when God is speaking.
Lord, help us open the ears of our hearts to you, so that when you speak we listen and we change, more and more into the people you would wish us to be.
Amen |
