Lent - 23 February 2009
This week sees the start of the season of Lent. A period of forty days before Easter - beginning on Ash Wednesday. Lent is a season giving us an opportunity to reflect and prepare for the celebrations of Easter.
By observing the forty days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for forty days. Easter celebrates the resurrection, Lent is a time to recall the events leading up to the Crucifixion. A time of prayer, reflection and penance. So use this time well, Jesus said ‘’Go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father in secret’’.
So before you pray, enter that room - shut the door to the noise, the trivialities. In your quiet place, sit and speak to the Father who listens and knows what you need. Use reflective reading of the Bible and ask for the Holy Spirit to be alongside you - as your companion on your journey through Lent. Resolve to use this season well, to grow and journey in faith. |
