Dreams - 20 January 2009
A young man was preparing to go to work in Europe, but shortly before he was due to leave he had a dream. Most of us cannot remember our dreams five minutes after we wake up, but his was so vivid he could remember every detail. He knew the country and saw a boat on a beach with a young man resting in the shade. He was so impressed that he changed his plans and went to the other country for the summer. One day he came upon a beach that he knew was the one in his dream and there was the young man sitting in the shade of the boat he remembered. They got talking, spiritual matters were discussed, and by the end of the day the man by the boat accepted Jesus as his saviour. The last report of him told how he was actively engaged in fellowship with a group of believers.
God can and does communicate with us in dreams.
But beware! Jeremiah knew that dreamers who profess to have a message from the Lord should not always be accepted at face value.
“Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers proclaim my every word. There is a difference between chaff and wheat.”
Jeremiah 23: 28 [NIV]
The problem is how do you differentiate between a genuine, revealed message from God and the product of a wicked or vain imagination? The key is to test what is said against Scripture. Jeremiah understood that the more familiar we are with what God has to say in the Bible the less likely we are to be led astray by “smooth tongued prophets” Jeremiah 23: 31
Carefully studying Scripture and applying it to our lives may seem unglamorous and mundane compared to getting dramatic revelations and making imaginative predictions, but the Bible is so powerful and so refreshing when we really get into it, that we will relish it as the staple diet for spiritual nourishment. Should we, on occasion, get a special dream from God – that’s a wonderful dessert!
God’s dreams can become realities.
