Knowing my purpose - 12th January 2009
2009 has already been a challenging Year! I have had several good e-mails at the start of this New year that have challenged me to stand up for what I truly believe in, and to consider what I think about certain issues, and about why some things happen. What impact can my actions have to influence and change those things, which we are challenged to question?
Regardless of what we think of New Year Resolutions, I believe that the start of a New Year always gives us an opportunity to review and to consider what we would like to achieve. This week I am going to take a few of those heart desires we may have and consider God’s answer to our deepest longings. Not things for this year, but things for this life. What are my deepest longings?
“I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt….So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:7;10 [NIV]
It seems that God calls some people to specific tasks. Those tasks may seem of great significance, or they may seem very mundane. Some of us may feel that we know exactly what Gods purpose is for us and what He is calling us to do, and are delighted to be where He wants us to be, but then find some great obstacle comes along to shatter that dream. Others of us feel like we are just plodding along in life without any clear direction from God, and we long for the faith that others seem to have. We want to know why we are here and what our purpose is.
God does have a specific task for all of us, for everybody who ever lived or who ever shall live. The fact that we all share the identical purpose does not minimise its importance; your purpose is to praise God. He created this universe to give honour to Him. He doesn’t need you; he doesn’t need angels or mountains in order to have worth. But He chose to make us anyway. He wants you to live in His kingdom.
As you devote your life to honour and praise Him, you find your reason for living, and your heart will fill with joy. Rejoice in the purpose that you have!
Almighty God, I honour you and give you praise. You are worthy and I glorify your name in all the Earth. Thank you for my purpose. AMEN
