Together we can find God – 4 December 2008

St Matthew’s and St Oswald’s is part of the Anglican Church, which is given a lot of bad press for not being firm in beliefs sometimes.  It is seen as weak. But I think it is proud to say we have all the answers, to say you have God all figured out?

Example (so you don’t think I am making this up!). A guy called Anselm, who lived in the 11th Century, was the first person to really look at the idea of Jesus as an atoning sacrifice, that we were not good enough and a price had to be paid for our sin.  He said that the person to pay this price could only be God himself in human form.

That is crazy, I know you will think it is biblical and many people must have thought of it before – but they didn’t, we see it in the Bible now because Anselm was so influential.

He is the most influential theologian ever; you don’t even know you are thinking of what he thought when you read the Bible.  Imagine if no one listened to him, or rejected him for being Anglican and not Baptist.

It is only by working together than we can fully understand God.

We need ideas from loads of people, from loads of different backgrounds. Then we can get a better idea of who God it.  This should not stop us worshipping together, we all love Jesus and that’s what binds us.  Together we can get such a better understanding of God.
