Each day this week I will look at a few of the many Names of God, on which I am no expert, however the little I have learnt has helped me to discover more of his nature, his character, and his deep love for his children.
"So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided". Genesis 22:14 [NIV]
Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son Isaac, but just as Abraham was about to kill his son, the Lord stopped him and showed him a ram caught in a thicket and told him to use that instead.
When I first heard this story at Sunday school I remember thinking Abraham must have been a madman and God wasn't much better! Abraham was called upon to endure the most heart-rending trial. Faith must be proved; and it is proved only when it is put to the test. God did not want Abraham's son, he wanted Abraham's heart.
Jehovah-Jireh, 'the Lord who will see to it' was Abraham's testimony to the goodness and grace of God and it is the testimony of every sinner who sees Christ as their Substitute, "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" Romans 8:32 [NIV]
I can be a stubborn and self-sufficient person and have often struggled on in my own abilities – or lack of them! In the last few years I have learnt to rest in Gods' provision for me, free from worry, on paper my finances don't add up, I have been in impossible situations, but Gods' maths is not on paper. I do not have much but I have everything I need, again and again 'God sees to it', and often he just shows off! In all areas of my life, not just finances, I sometimes feel like God waits until the last minute to send help, but that is only from my human point of view. God is never late he is always right on time!
Abraham was at the right place, in Gods' will, so God could meet his needs. "So let us come boldly to the very throne of God and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our times of need" Hebrews 4:16 [Living Bible].
"Father," Issac asked, "we have the wood and the flint to make the fire, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?" Abraham answered with confident faith in his God, "God will see to it, my son." Genesis 22: 7-8 [Living Bible] and, right on time, God did. |
