Abraham - 16 Sept 2008
I have been looking at the life of Abraham through Carl’s book. I’m sure we all know the story of Abraham and Isaac and how he was prepared to sacrifice his son when God told him to. That must have been the ultimate test. However, if we follow the life of Abraham in the Bible (Genesis 12 – 25) we find that every time God commanded him to do something, or to go somewhere, he did it more or less without question and never refused to comply. He had absolute faith in God, loved to do His bidding and trusted Him implicitly.
Abraham had an incredible life. The way he tackled the command to leave everything
behind is inspiring. The Lord had said to Abram,
“Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you”. Genesis 12.1 [NIV]
People in Abram’s time (God renamed him Abraham later) were nomadic. Even so,
it’s always a wrench to leave behind everything you know and love and are familiar
with. Human nature tends to want to settle. We pitch our tent, as it were, decorate
and attempt to fit in while keeping our heads down. Abraham was different. He spent time striving and pioneering, obedient to God’s call despite the cost.
Somewhere along the way most of us have lost that sense of adventure and
pioneering we once had. When God calls we often find reasons not to go, and hide in our comfort zone. Perhaps we’ve stopped listening in case we hear something we
are not prepared to obey. Let us listen more attentively, take that hard path – and see
the Lord at work.
Are you thinking you’re too old, adventure’s done, and you’ve served your time? Think again – it’s never over till we are called home.
Remember this : God always finishes what He starts – as long as we are willing.
Live the adventure.
