Devoted to Prayer – 28 May 2008
Probably Jesus understood that prayer meetings would not be over popular when he reminded the disciples that when 2 or 3 are gathered in his name, he would be there with them! Jesus himself was faithful in private personal prayer and in the corporate prayer of the Jews in Synagogue and Temple.
In the early church we see the first Christians devoted to prayer and meeting together for it – and the church growing daily - might there be a connection?
Any love or devotion is expressed in a relationship, and prayer is the channel of communication in the Christian’s relationship with Jesus. So why is it we can say we are devoted to Jesus and yet we don’t seem so keen to talk to him? I’m not only asking you that question, but me too!
It’s true with most things that we find the time to do the things we want to do, and that if we want to improve at something, we have to set aside time to practise it! If we don’t, we have to be honest with ourselves.
However, if we know we need to pray but don’t do it, and if we know we should want to pray but we don’t do it – what can we do?
Just do what you can, but when you pray, pray like that man who wanted Jesus to heal his son. He said “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" - why not pray everyday “Lord I want to pray, help me to want it more”. |
