Oscar winner - 11 April 2008
Forest Whitaker won the 2007 Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “The Last King of Scotland” playing Idi Amin. Here is an extract from his acceptance speech: “When I was a kid, the only way that I saw movies was from the backseat of my family's car at the drive-in. And, it wasn't my reality to think I would be acting in movies, so receiving this honour tonight tells me that it's possible. It is possible for a kid from east Texas, raised in South Central L.A. in Carson, who believes in his dreams, commits himself to them with his heart, to touch them, and to have them happen…..I want to thank …. God who believes in us all, who's given me this moment, in this lifetime, that I will hopefully carry to the end of my lifetime into the next lifetime. Thank you."
I am not sure what Forest Whitaker believes about God exactly, and my brief search of the Internet didn’t help me find out much, but I think he is right when he says “God who believes in us all”. We know that God loves us (John 3:16) and he has shown the extent of that love in the death of his son, but that means more than forgiveness, it means purpose, hope and a future.
We can’t all be Oscar winning actors, and I’m sure there is more to it than just believing in your dreams. For the Christian I think it has to be God’s purpose for your life too. But whether you’re still searching for that purpose, or have found it, know today that the Lord is fully behind you. |
