13 February 2008 - I know what I'm here for: Doing the Stuff
Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
This passage is one of my favourite – it speaks of God’s grace, and our need for Christ and also the partnership that we have with God in serving him in our day to day lives. I love the way we are not described simply as “workers” – drones who are to fulfil the bosses every bidding.
Rather, we are his workmanship, he is shaping us for the things that lie ahead, the things that he has prepared us to be fruitful in. How have you seen God shape and change you? Does that help you sense areas of service he is leading you into, or confirm your present involvement?
We have been created in Christ to do these things. Let us affirm afresh our commitment to them.
Father, I thank you that you have uniquely made me and have prepared works in which I can make a difference for the sake of your Kingdom. Help me to act as Jesus would, with his priorities in the relationships and situations you have placed me – help me to faithfully fulfil the roles that you give me and ruthlessly deal with any obstacles. I recommit myself to your service: use me today I pray. Amen.
