Heroes of the dash – Enoch, Moses & Elijah - 30 Jan 2008
Have you ever wondered how you’ll be remembered? What inscription would you like?
The comic genius Spike Milligan chose these words: “I told you I was ill!” (Apparently for this to be allowed it had to be written in Yiddish)
I’ve always loved the words written in the Bible about Enoch, Moses and Elijah:
Enoch: Enoch walked with God…and he was no more because God took him away.
Moses: Since then no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses whom the Lord knew face to face.
Elijah: As they, Elisha and Elijah, were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind
We know a little about Enoch and a lot about Moses and Elijah, but all made an enormous impact on their world. Yet their secret lay in the way they walked with God. Their values, their passions and their lives’ work flowed from a relationship with their maker. Their move from this life to the next was seamless.
John Wesley was once asked this question: If you knew that you had only twenty fours left, what would you do differently?
He answered, famously: I wouldn’t change my plans!
Heavenly Father, help me to stay close beside you so that I wouldn’t have to change my plans either. |
